Peelers and softback crabs are a very sought after bait. They are very hard to come by in number and everyone always sells out of them. They are so popular with sea anglers because of their ability to attract almost any fish within the area. They are often found by locals along the shoreline underneath rocks. The crabs come into the shore to escape the dangers of the deeper water when peeling, as they can be easily found by predators due to their strong scent. Peeler crabs are renowned for catching fish such as Bass, Skate and Eels amongst others so it is understandable that peelers are highly prized amongst anglers. Hermit crabs are becoming more widely used not only as a replacement for peelers when out of stock but have become recognised as a great bait to use when fishing for smoothound. They have a ‘sac’ kind of tail which is often hidden away inside the shells in which they live, but once out of the shell you can see the tail, and it is this part of the hermit which attracts the fish. It is filled with juices which give off a really poignant scent when burst and the hermits are becoming more and more popular with shore anglers.
